Bob (aka "The Big Dog")

I am (more or less) the father of this zoo. I work as a UNIX Systems Administrator. I am employed by Analysts International.

My main interests, beside playing with computers, are skiing, scuba diving, riding steam trains, and messing around with old trucks.

Ethnic Background

I am primarily of German descent with some Scots, English, French, and Cherokee thrown in for good measure. Over the last few years, I have been trying to learn more about my heritage including learning to speak some basic German. Please click on the German flag to view the links that I have found interesting

As I mentioned above, I am a UNIX Systems Administrator. I have worked with Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX. However, I tend to specialize in Solaris. In addition, I am an MCSE, and a ClearCase Consultant. I reeeaaalllyyy don't want to get involved in religious war about either Windoze or Linux. There is enough of that already. However, computers (and especially UNIX) are frequently funny, so I would rather deal with that. Please click the spell book for a sampling of UNIX and Sys Admin humor.

Finally, a few thoughts that I try to use everyday. For many years I wrestled with anger and depression and became embittered and unable to enjoy the good things in my life. Along the path toward change, I encountered some extraordinary people and some really useful bits of philosophy. Here, then, are some things that I try to keep in mind each day.
Serenity Prayer
GOD, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, and
the Wisdom to know the difference.
Desirderata
A Poem found in Old St. Paulīs Church in Baltimore has become a familiar and inspiring credo displayed throughout the English speaking world, and day by day its popularity grows.

The poem is "Desiderata," which translates from the latin to "Things to be desired." It's hard to say why this collection of simple-minded platitudes is so popular. This piece was actually written by an Indiana poet named Max Ehrman, in about 1926.

Whatever the reasons for its popularity, I find to contain some fairly good advise.
